It was a good night for the 3-time ISRL champion Bob “hurricane” Bachman, but it would be over-shadowed by a violent 7-car crash on lap 3 when Jasen Skyberg and Dick Sola made contact coming off turn two. Dick Sola was leading the race when Jasen Skyberg put a nose underneath him coming off turn two but only to run out of room and cause a chain reaction crash that sent Dick sola end over end coming to rest at the entry of turn three. Jasen said “he got under the 59 car and I saw him get loose so I cranked the wheel hard left to avoid him but was not able to avoid contact” which sent the 59 air born and spun Jasen in front of the rest of the 15 car field. Walt Calkins with no where to go t- boned Jasen sending his 33 car up in the air spinning around and pounding into the drivers side of Richard Portenier 9 car sending Skyberg, Calkins and Portenier hard into the backstretch wall. Other’s in the crash were points leader Sellars, Bob Parks and Rex Reeve. All suffering minor damage. Dick Sola had to take a ride to the hospital where it was found that he suffered two broken wrists a broken arm and broken ribs. Randy Sellars said the the first thing he said was “how bad is the car”? Get well soon Mr. Sola we are all thinking about you!
Bob Bachman caputred his first quick time in nearly a year with a fast lap of 14.704, Dean Waltman was 2nd quick followed by Sellars, Reeve and Skyberg. Walt Calkins captured the B-heat win with a couple of very nice passes on the 59 and 5 car. He was followed by Sammons, Graybeal, Portenier, Ortiz and Rookie Chad Reeve.
In the A-heat Bob Parks held off a fierce challenge from Bachman on the last lap beating him .016 second back to the line. Waltman captured 3rd with an exciting last lap pass of Skyberg they were followed by Sellars Reeve and Burke. Five time champion Dean Waltmans night would end with mechanical failure.
Bachman had the fastest car all night as he went on to capture the main event. Chad Sammons out for his first race of the season ran in second place for most of the race before finally getting passed by new comer Kyle Waner. Sammons said “I made the kid work his @#$ off” but it was fun! Burke finished fourth followed by a career high 5th place for Andy Graybeal.
All of the ISRL drivers family and crews thoughts and prayers are with you Mr. Sola for a fast recovery! See you at the races : June 26 in Pocatello. ISRL
